I’ll define design as a touch point to solve problems.

The role of a designer is critical in the most basic thing we see in our environment. Our thoughts and behaviours are deeply influenced by design, little wonder when events occur around us that say that it has been designed to happen.
This basically implies that design is the foundation of even our existence.
Indeed God is a designer. 👑
Because of the importance of design, I’ve paid close attention to understanding what this field really is and how it can be applied effectively to my daily life.
Now that I have to reflect on some of the things that saw me through the earlier stages of my career, I see every reason why starting off the right way would impact a whole lot. Here are 5 things that have helped in navigating my career path better.
First things first is to never ever lose out on creativity.
They say the more you use creativity, the more vast you’ll become, so your creativity cannot be used up. Creativity is synonymous to innovation and this vital recipe will always set you apart from your pair. The only thing that sets you apart from every other thinker is your ability to make something out of almost nothing. The fact that you strive for creativity always, will open up new terrains.
Secondly, pay close attention to the environment.
The same way you find a mentor in any chosen field, learn from the universe. You’ll find out how much inspiration you can draw from the environment when you choose to experience everything nature has to offer. This is almost similar to the next lesson I learnt but you need to understand the uniqueness of what having the universe as a mentor will do for your career.
I’ll also mention that feeding my subconscious has been a great growth tool.
90% of my mobile phone memory is filled with several forms of research materials from screenshots to mobile apps sourced from different sectors, to books and many things that fascinates me. Learn from everyone and everything, visit new places. Our subconscious memory is virtually perfect, it functions as a data bank to store and retrieve information unconsciously. See new things, It works like magic.
Start somewhere, start small.
We always have that dream of starting something big that will forever change the entire course of human history. The only thing stopping you from that dream is starting. This is a major challenge most designers starting out their career face, even seniors are also affected by the urge to want things done perfectly.
We think, think and over-think, even thinking 💭 is tired of our thoughts. Starting small is a lesson I have learnt the hard way. I realised that it was such a wrong motive to start something hoping that it would impact the whole world immediately. I don’t even expect to be viral on this first post, I just want to be able to touch a few people even if I have plans of reaching more people, I believe that one begat many.
Finally, I’ve learnt that consistency is key.
Whether you’ve just started to use Figma as a tool for product design or you even just started reading books, let me inform you that the first few days, weeks or even months might be challenging. I’m still learning the act of always showing up as I hope to keep impacting.
Just because I’ve developed a formula that has helped me in the past, and I’m prepared to use it whenever I feel like quitting.
🎁 Bonus:
Before you start out, ask yourself the question ‘why’ ‘who’ and ‘when’ these questions will help you develop a purpose statement, one that matters so much to you and can connect to your goals. Strive to make this purpose statement larger than life and also achievable.
Purpose will keep you going, keep pressing on. Never stop, never settle.
These are the 5 very valuable lessons I learned starting my career and has evolved into multiple other learnings, that I look forward to sharing with you in subsequent series.
• Don’t forget to never lose creativity
• Make the universe a mentor
• Feed your subconscious memory
• Start somewhere- start small
• Stay consistent - with a purpose statement
